The first step on the path to becoming an EMT is taking a four to six week EMT-Basic course. These EMT training courses focus on providing a board overview of the skills that a person will need to provide exemplary medical service during a crisis situation. Resulting in a certificate after completion of 140 hours of class, these courses of study cover everything from patient assessment and trauma management to patient transportation and use of medical devices.
The upper levels of emergency medical training available in North Carolina are through Paramedic Training programs. These courses last one year for certificate programs and between 18 months and 2 years for degree programs (an Associate in Applied Science). Paramedic training programs extend the knowledge gained in basic EMT courses by covering such information as cardiology, pharmacology, advanced trauma management, and medical ethics.
After graduating from an EMT or paramedic training program, individuals may sit for the National Registry of EMTs examination. After becoming certified by the National Registry, individuals can then become licensed by the state of North Carolina at the same level of their National Registry certification (EMT-B, EMT-I, or EMT-Paramedic).
