The emergency medical professional provide valuable, life-saving services to people in their hours of need. Anyone over the age of 18 can begin a course of study to become an EMT. There are three levels of EMT training currently available in California: EMT-I (basic), EMT-II (intermediate), and paramedic, and it typically takes between two to four years to become fully certified.

For entrance into an EMT-I program, the only state-mandated requirement is that an individual must be at least 18 years old. For EMT-II and paramedic training, individuals must have one year of EMT-I experience and high school diploma. In addition to the state-mandated requirements, most institutions require a copy of a student’s educational transcripts, immunization records, and applications. Introductory EMT training programs must last at least 120 hours. They typically cover basic life support techniques including patient assessment, use of first aid, breathing aids, and use of automated external defibrillators.

Upon EMT-I certification, individuals may further their education by taking an EMT-II course. These courses must last at least 306 hours, with 210 hours in the classroom and lab and 96 hours in a training or field internship setting. Skills covered in these classes include intravenous infusions, how to obtain venous blood, EKG monitoring, and how to use a variety of medications (list of medications differs based on practice area and specialty).

The top level of EMT training in California is Paramedic Training. This course of study lasts 1,090 hours and is split between classroom work, labs, hospital clinical training, and field internships. For graduation from this program, individuals must treat at least 40 patients in the field and master ET intubation, glucose measuring, needle thoracostomy, and nasogastric intubation among other skills.

At the end of each of the courses of study, individuals must test with the National Registry of EMTs for certification at EMT-B, EMT-I, and NR-EMT levels, respectively. Certifications are good for two years, and every individual must be retested for certification every four years.
