EMT Paramedic School Programs in Indiana

EMT Paramedic School Programs in Indiana

EMTs and paramedics provide pre-hospital medical care to individuals in a variety of emergency situations. Individuals drawn to these fields are trained in all aspects of patient assessment and crisis management to be able to help people in their times of need. There are two basic levels of study for emergency health in Indiana: EMT-Basic and paramedic. Individuals must become tested and certified by the state and the National Registry before they can become an EMT or paramedic in Indiana.

Prerequisites for EMT Paramedic School Programs in Indiana

All applicants to one of the EMT Paramedic school programs in Indiana must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Additionally, many institutions require copies of academic transcripts, applications, and proof of identification before a student is allowed to enroll in the school program.

In addition to these requirements, those applying to paramedic programs must already possess certification at the state level as an EMT-B. Further, many institutions require individuals to pass an entrance exam on basic emergency health practices for entrance into the program.

Description of EMT Paramedic School Programs in Indiana

EMT training begins with an EMT-B course that covers three primary levels of information: basic life support for emergency situations, non-emergency medical support (such as delivering babies and bandaging wounds), and non-medical emergency medicine skills such as extrication techniques and equipment care. These courses typically take between four to six months to complete.

The next step in emergency medical training in Indiana is Paramedic Training. They are the highest trained pre-hospital health care professionals in the state. These courses of study take about 15 months in the classroom and include additional study time in on-the-job internships and clinical work. Information covered in these classes includes advanced anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, cardiac trauma support, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. These programs either end in a certificate or in associate’s degree in a field like Paramedic Technology or Emergency Medical Services.

Regardless of which level of emergency health training an individual has just completed at one of the EMT Paramedic school programs in Indiana, they must take the certification tests with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the National Registry of EMTs (at the EMT-B and full EMT levels, respectively) to receive their certification and begin work.

Expected Salary of EMT Paramedics in Indiana

After becoming certified with both the state and the National Registry, EMT paramedics in Indiana can expect to make an initial salary between $28,000 and $33,000 a year. The average salary of paramedics in Indiana is about $38,000 a year, though this varies based on location, education, and experience.
